A coalition of opposition lawmakers urges the Federal Government to respect Kano State's decision to reinstate Emir Muhammadu Sanusi II, emphasizing non-interference in local chieftaincy matters.
A coalition of opposition federal lawmakers, under the G-60 platform comprising PDP, LP, NNPP, and others, has urged the Federal Government to respect Kano State's decision to reinstate Emir Muhammadu Sanusi II.
The G-60, represented by notable opposition lawmakers, emphasized that the federal government should avoid interfering in Kano's chieftaincy matters, which fall under the state’s jurisdiction.
The coalition expressed support for the Kano State government's move, condemning Sanusi's initial removal and banishment as an affront to the revered traditional institution.
In a statement issued after a closed-door meeting, Hon. Obi Aguocha (LP) and Ikenga Imo Ugochinyere (PDP) stressed the importance of allowing Emir Sanusi to reign peacefully without federal disruption.
The lawmakers were taken aback by claims that federal security agencies facilitated the return of Bayero to the palace but chose to give the benefit of the doubt following denials.
They reiterated that any federal involvement in the chieftaincy affairs of Kano could destabilize the already fragile region and urged for the federal government to respect the cultural heritage embedded in traditional institutions.
The G-60 vowed to support the Kano State government’s decision and called on all Nigerians who cherish peace and justice to back the reinstatement of Emir Sanusi.
They emphasized that protecting traditional institutions from external interference is crucial for maintaining cultural integrity and societal stability.
