Following a recent court ruling, the Kano State Government has ordered the immediate eviction of Emir Aminu Ado Bayero from Nasarawa Palace for property renovation. The ruling validates the new Kano Emirate Law 2024 and reinstates Muhammadu Sanusi II as Emir of Kano.

Following a recent court ruling, the Kano State Government has directed the State’s Commissioner of Police to immediately remove the 15th Emir of Kano, Aminu Ado Bayero, from the Nasarawa Palace. This state-owned property is slated for demolition and reconstruction, a move that has ignited strong reactions from Nigerians on social media.

Announced by the State’s Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, Haruna Dederi, during a press conference at the Government House, Kano, the directive underscores the government's plan to renovate the property, including demolishing part of its wall. Dederi stated, “The Kano State Government has ordered the Commissioner of Police to evict the 15th Emir Aminu Ado Bayero from the Nasarawa mini Palace as the palace belongs to the state government.”

The action follows a significant ruling by the Federal High Court in Kano, delivered by Justice A.M. Liman. The court confirmed the validity of the new Kano Emirate Law 2024, passed by the Kano State House of Assembly and signed by the Governor on May 23, 2024. The ruling affirmed that only actions taken post-assent to the Bill, in defiance of a prior court order, were nullified.

The judgment further validates the abolishment of the five emirates created in 2019 and the deposition of the five emirs. It reinstates Muhammadu Sanusi II as the Emir of Kano, given that the signing of the law and his reinstatement occurred before the interim order was served on May 27, 2024.

Dederi emphasized that the government has directed the police to remove the deposed emir from the government property, marking the commencement of its renovation and reconstruction, including the demolition of the dilapidated wall fence. Justice Liman’s ruling includes a stay of proceedings and transfers the case to Justice Amobeda of Court 3, delaying immediate enforcement until the appeal is resolved.
