Kano State Governor Abba Yusuf has empowered 2,386 women with 7,158 goats as part of the Livestock Fattening Programme under the Kano Agro-Pastoral Development Project. The initiative, valued at N2.3 billion, aims to alleviate poverty and promote economic self-sufficiency by encouraging livestock entrepreneurship. Each woman received three goats to support their efforts in animal farming, with future phases of the program set to distribute cows and rams to women and youth across Kano’s 44 local government areas.

While the initiative has been widely praised for its potential to improve livelihoods, many Nigerians have had mixed reactions. Some view the distribution of livestock as a practical step towards empowering rural women, encouraging sustainable agriculture, and strengthening food security. However, others have expressed skepticism, questioning the long-term impact of giving just three goats.

Despite these mixed opinions, many believe the program could lead to significant economic growth if the goats are properly managed and bred. If successful, it could pave the way for more women to gain financial independence through livestock farming, ultimately contributing to grassroots economic development in Kano.
