The Federal Government confirms a Bird Flu (HPAI) outbreak in Kano State, affecting various bird species. Poultry farmers are urged to follow strict biosecurity protocols and report unusual mortality. Authorities are working to prevent the spread of the disease to other regions through awareness campaigns and surveillance measures.
The Federal Government has confirmed an outbreak of Bird Flu (Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza, HPAI) in Kano State, which has affected various bird species, including layers, ducks, guinea fowl, and turkeys. The disease was first detected in December 2024 following the death of poultry after a student unknowingly purchased an infected duck.
The Ministry of Agriculture issued a circular emphasizing the importance of surveillance and biosecurity measures to prevent further spread. The Poultry Association of Nigeria (PAN), Kano State chapter, is collaborating with local authorities to raise awareness among poultry farmers and the public about the risks and prevention strategies.
The government has urged farmers to report any unusual mortality in their flocks to mitigate the impact of the outbreak.
