A recent diphtheria outbreak in Kano State has claimed the lives of over 40 people, predominantly children. The Infectious Disease Hospital (IDH) in Kano is overwhelmed, with its wards filled and more patients waiting for treatment.

An anonymous hospital official reported daily fatalities for the past two weeks. The surge in cases is attributed to the lack of facilities in local hospitals, forcing many patients to be referred to the IDH, the most equipped facility for handling infectious diseases. A mother whose daughter is receiving treatment expressed relief that her child is responding to care after being admitted with severe symptoms.

Despite the gravity of the situation, the State Hospital Management Board has not officially confirmed the death toll, stating that an emergency meeting is underway to address the crisis. The outbreak has raised concerns about the state's ability to manage such a public health emergency, with the hospital struggling to cope with the influx of patients.
