Mutiu Adepoju urges the Nigeria Football Federation to retain Augustine Eguavoen as Super Eagles coach after securing AFCON 2025 qualification. The former player highlights Eguavoen's achievements and calls for continuity to build a strong national team amid debates on hiring a foreign coach.
Former Super Eagles player Mutiu Adepoju has urged the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) to retain Augustine Eguavoen as head coach of the national team. Eguavoen, who took over in September on an interim basis, successfully guided the team to qualify for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).
During the qualifiers, the Super Eagles secured three victories, two draws, and one loss, achieving the primary qualification objective. Despite this, there are reports that the NFF is considering appointing a foreign coach to lead the team.
Speaking in an interview with Brila FM, Adepoju commended Eguavoen’s performance and emphasized the importance of continuity in building a strong national team. He argued that Eguavoen has proven his capability and deserves the chance to continue.
“I believe he has done an excellent job by leading the team to AFCON qualification,” said Adepoju. “He should be given the necessary support and encouragement to continue his work with the team. I rate him highly and believe he’s on the right path.”
The suggestion to keep Eguavoen has sparked discussions about the Super Eagles' future direction. While some advocate for retaining local expertise, others argue for the experience a foreign coach might bring to the team.
As the NFF weighs its options, Adepoju’s backing of Eguavoen underscores the potential benefits of investing in homegrown talent and fostering stability within the team.
