Kenneth Okonkwo, actor turned politician, criticizes Nigerians for not protesting the recent petrol price hike to N1,000 per liter. He contrasts this with past protests against lower price hikes, highlighting the irony of current leaders' silence. Okonkwo's remarks follow President Tinubu's decision to remove fuel subsidies in 2023.
Kenneth Okonkwo, the Nollywood actor turned politician, has criticized Nigerians for their lack of protest against the recent petrol price hike. In a recent Instagram post, Okonkwo expressed his dismay over what he perceives as public complacency in the face of a steep increase in petrol prices to N1,000 per liter.
He compared this to the widespread protests that erupted years ago when petrol prices were raised to N140 per liter during the Goodluck Jonathan administration. Okonkwo pointed out the irony that those who led the protests back then, including President Bola Tinubu, are now in power and silent about the current price hike. He condemned the situation as hypocritical, declaring, “It shall not be well with the wicked.” Okonkwo’s comments come in the wake of Tinubu's 2023 decision to remove fuel subsidies, leading to a sharp increase in fuel prices. The official pump price is about N600 per liter, but the landing cost is around N1,200 per liter. Okonkwo, who started his acting career in 1992, has since ventured into politics, joining the All Progressive Congress (APC) before switching to the Labour Party (LP) in 2022. However, he resigned from the LP in June 2024, expressing dissatisfaction with the party's direction.
