Families of victims killed in the 2018 Offa bank robbery are suing Kwara State government, Saraki, and former Governor Ahmed for N2.1 billion in compensation. They accuse the state of complicity and claim that convicted robbers linked their actions to political affiliations, including Saraki and Ahmed's alleged involvement.
The families of victims killed during the 2018 Offa bank robbery have filed a lawsuit seeking N2.1 billion in compensation from the Kwara State government and key political figures. The robbery, which took place on April 5, 2018, targeted the Nigeria Police Station, Owode, and several banks in Offa, resulting in several deaths. The claimants argue that the Kwara state government, under the leadership of former Governor Abdulfatah Ahmed, is complicit in the crime, alleging that evidence from the scene of the robbery was found in the government house.
Further claims suggest that convicted robbers linked the attack to political affiliations, with confessions from suspects stating that they were political thugs working for Bukola Saraki, the former President of the Senate, and Abdulfatah Ahmed. The claimants argue that the robbers used vehicles branded with "Saraki" and were involved in violent political activities, including election manipulation.
The families are now seeking compensation for the loss of their loved ones, many of whom were the primary breadwinners. The lawsuit, filed before the Ilorin High Court, demands N1.5 billion in compensation, N500 million in general damages, and N100 million to cover legal expenses.
The defendants in the case include the Kwara State Governor, the Attorney-General, Saraki, and Ahmed. Legal representatives for the claimants include prominent Senior Advocates of Nigeria, including Johnson Usman, Yakubu Philemon, M. Abubakar, and A. Philip.
