Three police officers in Kwara State were dismissed and charged with culpable homicide in connection with the death of Quayum Abdulyekeen Ishola, a Kwara Polytechnic student. Ishola died from injuries sustained at a police checkpoint, prompting student protests demanding accountability and a thorough investigation.
The Kwara State Police Command has terminated the employment of three officers accused of being involved in the death of Quayum Abdulyekeen Ishola, a student from Kwara Polytechnic. Ishola, who was studying Electrical and Electronics Engineering, was fatally injured at a police checkpoint on September 4. He suffered a ruptured vein and died from blood loss on September 5 at the University of Ilorin Teaching Hospital.
His death sparked protests among students, who marched to the Kwara State Police Headquarters to demand a thorough investigation. They alleged that Ishola was shot by officers at the checkpoint located along the Panat-ShopRite Road in Ilorin.
On September 9, police spokesperson Olumuyiwa Adejobi confirmed the names of the officers involved: Inspector Abiodun Kayode, Inspector James Emmanuel, and Sergeant Oni Philip. Following their arrest, they were detained at the Force’s Criminal Investigation Department in Abuja for further investigation.
On October 16, it was revealed that the officers had been charged with criminal conspiracy and culpable homicide related to Ishola’s death. Police spokesperson Adetoun Ejire-Adeyemi announced that the officers would remain in custody as the case progresses through the judicial system, emphasizing the command's commitment to transparency and accountability regarding the incident.
