A resident of Ilorin, Kwara State, Jimoh Abdulquadri, tragically passed away in police custody after being arrested over a N220,000 debt. Abdulquadri was taken into custody on Friday after a complaint was made by a friend regarding the debt. The following day, his family was notified of his death.
In a distressing video shared online, Abdulquadri’s sister, Aishat Biola, revealed that her brother had been deceived and taken away by police officers under pretenses. According to her, officers had been waiting outside their home to arrest him. The family expressed outrage over the circumstances surrounding his death.
In response, the Kwara State Police Command issued a statement, confirming that Abdulquadri was invited to the station in connection with an alleged case of fraud involving the N220,000 debt. They assured the public that an investigation was underway to determine the cause of his death.
On Sunday, the Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, visited the deceased’s family to offer condolences and ensure a thorough investigation into the matter. This tragic event highlights the ongoing concern over police involvement in civil matters, as officers are typically advised to avoid handling disputes over debts or contracts.
