The Zenith Labour Party (ZLP) won the Abia State Council elections in 15 of 17 LGAs, with the Young Progressives Party (YPP) taking the remaining two. The Labour Party, led by Governor Alex Otti, faced significant voter apathy, signaling a shift in local political dynamics.

The Labour Party (LP) in Abia State experienced a setback in the November 2 council elections, with the Zenith Labour Party (ZLP) winning in 15 of the 17 Local Government Areas (LGAs). The Young Progressives Party (YPP) secured victories in the remaining two LGAs, Ugwunagbo and Osisioma Ngwa, marking a shift in political dynamics.

Prof. Chima George, Chairman of the Abia State Independent Electoral Commission (ABSIEC), announced the results from the ABSIEC headquarters in Umuahia. He emphasized the efforts to encourage voter awareness across Abia and noted that the commission had worked diligently since its inauguration in September to conduct a fair election.

Despite a peaceful election process, voter turnout was low, with apathy across the state. The Labour Party’s loss to the ZLP and YPP highlights a possible shift in voter preference, which could have implications for Abia’s political landscape under Governor Alex Otti.

With these results, the Labour Party may need to assess its strategy to reconnect with voters as emerging parties gain traction in local elections.
