The Labour Party welcomes Senator Rabiu Kwankwaso's offer to be Peter Obi's running mate for the 2027 presidential election. This follows past merger discussions between the LP and NNPP, which collapsed over leadership disputes. Kwankwaso expresses readiness for talks under specific conditions, emphasizing the importance of unity in the opposition.

The Labour Party (LP) has warmly accepted Senator Rabiu Kwankwaso’s proposal to join Peter Obi as a running mate in the upcoming 2027 presidential election. This offer comes just two years after failed merger talks between the LP and Kwankwaso’s New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP), which fell apart due to leadership disputes.

In a recent viral video, Kwankwaso expressed his readiness to support Obi, conditional upon certain negotiations. He emphasized that while he respects Obi’s political achievements, he believes his stature and qualifications surpass those of the former governor, noting his PhD and successful tenure as the governor of Kano State. Despite his stature, Kwankwaso stated he is open to discussions if trust can be established.

Reflecting on the previous elections, Obi secured over 6 million votes, while Kwankwaso trailed with just under 1.5 million. Kwankwaso has been critical of President Bola Tinubu's government, particularly regarding economic challenges facing Nigerians.

Umar Farouk, the LP’s National Secretary, welcomed Kwankwaso's overture but urged him to refrain from claims of superiority, highlighting the need for unity among opposition parties to challenge the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC). Farouk stressed that the dynamics of Nigerian politics are changing and emphasized the importance of collaboration for a viable challenge in the 2027 elections.

Meanwhile, a legislative aide to the Deputy President of the Senate expressed confidence that Tinubu would secure a second term, citing ongoing development programs that have won the support of the electorate in Kano.

As the political landscape evolves, the potential partnership between Kwankwaso and Obi could reshape the opposition's strategy heading into the next presidential election, potentially galvanizing support from voters seeking a viable alternative to the current government.
