The Lagos State House of Assembly sought DSS intervention to block ex-Speaker Mudashiru Obasa’s return, citing security concerns. Obasa, removed over alleged financial misconduct, insists he remains Speaker. Security was tightened at the Assembly complex, escalating tensions amid the leadership crisis. The political standoff remains unresolved.

The Lagos State House of Assembly has reportedly sought the intervention of the Department of State Services (DSS) to prevent former Speaker Mudashiru Obasa from resuming office.

In a letter dated February 14, 2025, and signed by Acting Clerk Abubakar Ottun, the Assembly cited security concerns over Obasa’s planned return on February 18. The letter requested the deployment of security operatives from February 16 to enforce strict access control around the complex.

Obasa, who was removed from office on January 13 over allegations of financial misconduct, has continued to challenge his removal, insisting that due process was not followed. He maintains that he remains the legitimate Speaker of the House.

The Assembly, however, remains firm in its decision, highlighting the potential risk his return could pose. In response, heavy security presence was observed at the Assembly complex on Monday, with police officers and task force operatives stationed at key entry points. Reports also indicate that the Speaker’s office was sealed.

The leadership crisis in the Lagos Assembly has deepened since Obasa’s removal, with tensions escalating as political maneuvering continues. While Obasa seeks legal redress, the Assembly appears determined to prevent his reinstatement.

Observers say the coming days could be critical in determining the next phase of the crisis, as both sides refuse to back down.
