LAMATA has announced an 18% increase in Lagos BRT fares, effective February 17, due to rising operational costs. Commuters express concerns over the hike, recalling past increases. While BRT operators plan to adopt CNG buses, they confirm that fares will not be reduced. Lagos residents brace for higher transportation costs.
Lagos residents will soon pay higher fares for the Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) system as the Lagos Metropolitan Area Transport Authority (LAMATA) has announced an 18% fare hike, effective February 17, 2025. The agency attributed the increase to rising operational costs and the need to maintain an efficient transportation system.
In a statement, LAMATA explained that the adjustment was necessary to keep the buses running despite economic challenges. "The fare rise is due to the increase in the cost of operations and the need to guarantee your movement around Lagos," the agency said, urging commuters to understand the decision.
This is not the first time BRT fares have been increased. In June 2022, the Lagos State Government approved a N100 fare hike across all routes due to the rising cost of diesel and difficulties in sourcing spare parts for the buses.
Meanwhile, Fola Tinubu, Managing Director of Primero Transport Services Limited, a key operator of the BRT system, stated in a recent interview that his company plans to convert its buses to compressed natural gas (CNG) to cut costs. However, he clarified that this move would not lead to a reduction in fares as the company seeks financial sustainability.
The fare hike has sparked concerns among Lagos commuters, many of whom rely on the BRT for affordable transportation. With the cost of living already on the rise, residents are bracing for the financial strain of the fare adjustment.
