Lagos police officer arrested for allegedly raping a 17-year-old girl inside the station. The victim's mother accuses police of a cover-up attempt. The commissioner orders a thorough investigation. The case highlights concerns about civilian safety in police premises and officer accountability. The public demands justice and stricter oversight measures.

An Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) named Owolabi has been arrested in Lagos for allegedly raping a 17-year-old girl inside Ojota Police Station. The arrest came after the Lagos State Domestic and Sexual Violence Agency referred the case to Police Commissioner Adegoke Fayoade on July 1, 2024.
Lagos Police spokesperson Benjamin Hundeyin confirmed the arrest, stating that Commissioner Fayoade has ordered a thorough investigation. Hundeyin emphasized that there would be no cover-up, as such acts violate police ethics and conduct codes.

The victim's mother, Mrs. Aramide Olupona, had previously accused the police of attempting to cover up the incident. She reported that her daughter began bleeding after the assault and was taken to Mirabel Centre, where the rape was confirmed.

Olupona alleged that the suspect's family and the Area Commander had pleaded with her to drop the case, citing the officer's impending retirement. She expressed concern that her low economic status might affect justice for her daughter.

The police have assured the public that if found guilty, the officer will face consequences by police regulations and the law. This case has raised concerns about the safety of civilians within police premises and the accountability of law enforcement officers. The incident has sparked public outrage and calls for justice, highlighting the need for stricter oversight and protection measures within police stations to prevent such abuses of power.
