Lagos CP Moshood Jimoh confirms the reinstatement of Speaker Mojisola Meranda’s security detail, citing a routine audit. The move had sparked concerns amid legislative tensions following Mudashiru Obasa’s impeachment. Jimoh insists the withdrawal was not political, as Obasa continues to challenge the legitimacy of his removal.
The Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Moshood Jimoh, has confirmed the reinstatement of security details assigned to Mojisola Meranda, Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly. According to Jimoh, the initial withdrawal was part of an ongoing audit of police personnel, a process also being carried out in other states.
Addressing journalists on Thursday, Jimoh emphasized that the move was in the public interest and not politically motivated. “The audit ensures that police officers and their weapons are properly accounted for. The security personnel attached to Speaker Meranda have been reinstated following the completion of the process,” he stated.
The sudden withdrawal of Meranda’s security earlier in the day sparked concerns, particularly within the assembly. A senior official, speaking anonymously, suggested that the development raised questions about gender biases in leadership. “She was duly elected by an overwhelming majority. Would this have happened if she were a man?” the source questioned.
The situation took another twist when Mudashiru Obasa, the impeached speaker, arrived at the assembly complex flanked by security aides. Obasa, who was removed on January 13, has consistently disputed his impeachment, claiming the due process was not followed. In a symbolic move, he presided over a brief session attended by only four lawmakers, despite the assembly having 40 members.
As tensions persist in the Lagos legislature, the police maintain that the security audit is routine and devoid of political interference. However, the unfolding drama signals deeper divisions within the state’s legislative arm.
