A tragic grenade explosion in Lagos' Idi-Araba area has left one scavenger dead and three others injured. The incident occurred on Thursday afternoon when the deceased attempted to cut open a military-grade grenade, purchased as scrap metal, in a scrapyard on Taiwo Street. The device detonated, killing the man instantly and sparking a fire that caused panic in the densely populated neighborhood.
Eyewitnesses reported that the grenade was bought along with another as condemned metal, but upon trying to cut it, smoke began to billow from one of the devices before it exploded. Concerns have arisen about how the grenades found their way into civilian hands, with many speculating that they may have been stolen or sourced from a military site.
The Lagos State Police Command confirmed the explosion, describing it as accidental. Police spokesperson, Benjamin Hundeyin, stated that a distress call was received around 1:30 p.m., and the Explosives Ordnance Disposal (EOD) team from Ikeja was dispatched. Upon arrival, the team secured the scene, finding that the explosion resulted from a tampered grenade. The injured victims were taken to a hospital for treatment. Authorities are continuing the investigation into how these military-grade explosives reached the scavenger.
