The Lagos State Government has criticized NYSC member Ushie Uguamaye for her viral comment that "Lagos is smelling." Officials blamed the city's environmental challenges on uncontrolled migration and dismissed her concerns about high living costs. Social media reactions have sparked debates over governance and Lagos' infrastructure issues.
The Lagos State Government has strongly criticized National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) member Ushie Uguamaye over her viral remark that “Lagos is smelling.” Kunle Adesina, Director of Public Affairs at the Ministry of Environment and Water Resources, dismissed her claim, pointing out that despite her criticism, she continues to enjoy the city’s vibrant nightlife.
Adesina attributed the city’s environmental challenges to the massive influx of migrants, arguing that those who complain the most often contribute to the problem. He highlighted how street trading, open defecation, and disregard for regulations worsen the situation, making it difficult for the government to maintain cleanliness. He further defended the cost of living, stating that economic hardships are a global issue, not exclusive to Lagos.
Despite online backlash, government officials insist that Lagos remains one of Africa’s most highly-rated cities by international organizations. Adesina advised residents to live within their means, stressing that luxury areas like Lekki are not for everyone. Meanwhile, Uguamaye’s statement has ignited debates on social media, with many Nigerians questioning the government’s priorities.
