Time Out, a global media and hospitality brand, compiles this annual ranking by surveying thousands of residents and consulting local experts on food, nightlife, culture, and the sense of community in major cities.

Cape Town was crowned the best city in the world, scoring high on local happiness and food culture. Locals praised its scenic coastline, cultural offerings, and outdoor attractions like Table Mountain and the iconic penguin colony.

Marrakech, ranked 37th, earned its spot for blending tradition with modernity, offering a welcoming community and an evolving food scene that’s drawing more global interest.

Lagos came in at 41st, with 72% of residents saying it’s easy to connect and make friends in the bustling city. It was also recognised for its vibrant culture, music scene, and creative energy. As Nigeria’s commercial capital, Lagos continues to play a central role in shaping the continent’s cultural narrative.

While Cape Town leads Africa’s trio on the list, Lagos’s global recognition adds to growing calls for more investment in livability and tourism infrastructure.
