NAFDAC has destroyed counterfeit, expired, and banned medicines worth ₦100 billion seized from the Idumota Market in Lagos. The three-week operation resulted in multiple arrests. This action underscores NAFDAC’s commitment to combating illegal drugs and protecting public health in Nigeria.

The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has successfully destroyed counterfeit, expired, unregistered, and banned medicines seized from the Idumota Open Drug Market in Lagos. The operation, which lasted for three weeks, resulted in the confiscation of goods valued at an estimated ₦100 billion.

The destruction of these illicit products took place at the Lapite Dumpsite in Moniya, Ibadan, Oyo State. NAFDAC officials confirmed that several suspects were apprehended during the operation, with the agency promising that those responsible for the trade of counterfeit drugs would face appropriate legal actions.

The raid targeted a wide range of products, including pharmaceutical items that posed significant health risks to the public. Counterfeit drugs have long been a growing concern in Nigeria, with experts warning of the severe consequences such substances can have on patients, especially those with chronic conditions or serious illnesses. The widespread availability of such dangerous products not only undermines public health but also threatens the integrity of the country's healthcare system.

In addition to the direct health risks, NAFDAC's efforts to combat counterfeit drugs also highlight the broader economic impact of this illegal trade. The destruction of ₦100 billion worth of fake medicines is a major blow to the market, which has long been known for facilitating the sale of counterfeit goods.

NAFDAC’s successful operation underscores the agency's commitment to safeguarding public health and ensuring that only legitimate, safe medicines reach consumers. The agency's ongoing vigilance is seen as a crucial step in curbing the rise of counterfeit drugs in Nigeria’s markets.
