A recent survey has revealed that men in Lagos spent a staggering N661 billion on transactional sex in 2024. Conducted to assess the economic impact of commercial sex work, the study found that 1.86 million sexually active men engaged in non-partner transactions across 20 local government areas.

The data, shared by investment banker Kayode MO, detailed spending patterns, with N329 billion going directly to sex workers and N332 billion allocated to associated costs such as entertainment, gifts, and stimulants.

Eti-Osa Local Government emerged as the most expensive location, with rates reaching N100,000 per encounter. Other high-cost areas included Surulere, Kosofe, Alimosho, and Oshodi-Isolo.

The report also analyzed how sex workers utilized their earnings. N93 billion was spent on body and skin care, while N62.5 billion supported family expenses. Investments in businesses, including crypto, forex, and betting, accounted for N46 billion, while health and education expenses amounted to N30 billion combined.

Additionally, Lagos men spent N150.6 billion on entertainment, hospitality, and dining, while N33.4 billion went into drugs, sexual enhancers, and accessories.

Experts say the figures highlight both the economic significance and social dynamics of sex work in Nigeria, sparking debates on morality, public health, and regulatory frameworks.
