The Lagos State Police Command has released a statement regarding the tragic incident involving a man who jumped into a canal in the Ayobo area while allegedly fleeing from officers. According to spokesperson SP Benjamin Hundeyin, the events unfolded around 10 AM on October 16, 2024. The man, who was a passenger on a motorcycle, was spotted riding against traffic when the police vehicle approached.

In a panic, the motorcycle rider made a sharp turn, prompting the passenger to jump off and flee towards a nearby garage. Eyewitnesses reported that as the man ran, he emptied his pockets, leading people at the garage to warn him about the canal ahead. Ignoring the warnings, he leaped into the canal.

The police, initially startled, stopped their vehicle and proceeded toward the canal, but after waiting without seeing the man resurface, they assumed he had successfully escaped and left the scene. Hundeyin emphasized that the police did not engage the man or conduct a chase, stating that his actions were voluntary and regrettable. He concluded with condolences to the man's family, affirming the police’s commitment to maintaining professionalism under the leadership of CP Olanrewaju Ishola.
