The Lagos State government has firmly rejected a campaign advocating the forced relocation of Igbos from the state. Governor Sanwo-Olu condemned the divisive rhetoric and called for the arrest and prosecution of those behind the campaign, emphasizing that Lagos remains home to all Nigerians regardless of ethnicity.

The Lagos State government has unequivocally distanced itself from a campaign advocating the forced relocation of Igbos from the state and other southwestern regions. The campaign, initially propagated by a user on social media platform X (formerly Twitter), suggested that stakeholders in the Southwest prepare to enforce the relocation of Igbos from August 20 to 30.

In response, Gbenga Akosile, Special Adviser on Media and Publicity to Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu released a statement denouncing the campaign as "reckless, divisive, and dangerous rhetoric." Akosile emphasized that Lagos remains a welcoming home for all Nigerian citizens, regardless of their ethnic background. Governor Sanwo-Olu views the campaign as an attempt to sow discord between the Yoruba and other ethnic groups, particularly targeting those who have made Lagos their permanent residence. The statement urged security agencies to investigate the individuals behind the social media handle and ensure they face justice.

The controversy arose shortly after former Vice President and 2023 PDP presidential candidate Atiku Abubakar called on the Federal Government to arrest and prosecute those advocating for the mass relocation of Igbos. Abubakar highlighted the danger such rhetoric poses to national peace and security, noting a troubling silence from authorities in the days following the campaign's emergence online.

In a detailed rejoinder, the Lagos State government reiterated its commitment to unity and peace within the state. The governor's office urged residents to ignore divisive posts and assured them of intensified efforts to maintain harmony. Governor Sanwo-Olu appealed to Lagosians not to allow any group or individual to incite tension, reiterating the state's inclusive and peaceful stance.

The incident has sparked significant reactions from various stakeholders, including community leaders, human rights organizations, and the general public. Many have condemned the campaign as a threat to the social fabric of Lagos and have called for swift action against those responsible for promoting such divisive agendas.
