Lagos State has introduced new fines for traffic violations, including N20,000 for running red lights and N50,000 for overspeeding. The government has deployed advanced technology, including e-police and checkpoint sites, to monitor violations. The initiative aims to reduce road accidents and encourage responsible driving behavior.

The Lagos State Government has introduced a new enforcement plan for traffic violations, including fines of N20,000 for running red lights and N50,000 for overspeeding. The announcement was made by Commissioner for Transportation, Oluwaseun Osiyemi, on February 6, during a media briefing in Ikeja. The initiative is aimed at curbing road accidents and improving traffic discipline.

Four new Intelligent Traffic Systems (ITS) have been deployed at strategic locations to monitor and manage road violations effectively. These include checkpoint sites designed to detect overspeeding on Alapere-Ogudu Road and Nitel, Mobolaji Bank Anthony Way, where speed limits of 80 km/h and 60 km/h are enforced. In addition, e-police sites at Allen Avenue Road Junction and Nurudeen Olowopopo Road will monitor violations such as running red lights, illegal U-turns, and reverse driving on highways.

Motorists found violating traffic rules will receive SMS notifications from the Vehicle Inspection Service, detailing the violation and the corresponding fine. Osiyemi emphasized that the initiative aims not only to penalize drivers but to encourage responsible driving, reduce accidents, and foster safer roads for everyone. He urged drivers to obey traffic signals, respect speed limits, and adhere to lane discipline to avoid penalties and contribute to safer driving habits across the state.

The enforcement of these measures is set to begin immediately.
