The Lagos State Government will shut the Independence/Mekwen Bridge (Marina-CMS route) for two months, from March 19 to May 26, 2025, for repairs. Alternative routes have been provided, and LASTMA will manage traffic. Motorists are advised to plan ahead to avoid disruptions during the closure.

The Lagos State Government has announced the temporary closure of the Independence/Mekwen Bridge, affecting the inbound route to Marina and CMS. The closure, set to begin on Wednesday, March 19, will last until Monday, May 26, 2025, to facilitate essential repairs.

According to the Commissioner for Transportation, Oluwaseun Osiyemi, the affected section includes the stretch from the National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN) through Bonny Camp Bridge to Independence Bridge. Additionally, the Bonny Camp Underpass Bridge service lane leading to Independence Bridge will be inaccessible. However, the service lane from Ahmadu Bello Way to Ozumba Mbadiwe Avenue will remain open.

To mitigate traffic disruptions, alternative routes have been recommended. Motorists traveling to Victoria Island are advised to use Ozumba Mbadiwe Avenue via Akin Adesola Street, connecting through Falomo Roundabout to Obafemi Awolowo Road. Those heading toward the 3rd Mainland Bridge can navigate through Alfred Rewane Road to Osborne Road, linking to Ring Road.

For those traveling to Inner Marina and CMS, the diversion will direct them via Ozumba Mbadiwe Avenue to Falomo Roundabout, Obafemi Awolowo Road, and J.K. Randle Road.

Osiyemi assured residents that traffic officials from the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) will be deployed along key points to manage congestion throughout the period.

The announcement has sparked mixed reactions from Lagosians, with concerns over increased travel time, especially for commuters heading to work and school.
