Suspected Lakurawa terrorists killed 13 vigilantes in Kebbi State’s Morai village after their planned ambush failed. The group, responsible for escalating violence in the North-West, targeted cattle rustling. This attack highlights the rising insecurity in Kebbi and the region, further exacerbated by the infiltration of foreign terror groups.
On Sunday, a deadly assault by suspected Lakurawa terrorists in Morai, a village within Kebbi State's Augie Local Government Area, left 13 vigilantes dead. The vigilantes had received intelligence about a potential raid and strategically positioned themselves to ambush the attackers. Unfortunately, the ambush failed as the terrorists had already surrounded the group.
The attackers believed to be targeting cattle rustling, opened fire as the vigilantes attempted to engage, resulting in the instant deaths of at least 13. A resident, Alhaji Augie, confirmed the incident, stating that the location of the attack was just a few kilometers from their village.
The Lakurawa terrorist group, which infiltrated Nigeria from Niger Republic, has been responsible for escalating insecurity in the North-West. They are known for their violent operations, including cattle rustling and widespread terror. This particular attack is just one example of the growing instability caused by these militants in the region.
Senator Adamu Aliero of Kebbi Central District previously warned of Lakurawa’s increasing presence in the state, citing their use of sophisticated weapons. The group’s presence in Northern Mali and their subsequent migration into Nigeria have further contributed to the instability in the region.
