A tragic accident unfolded in Lagos on February 5 when a reckless trailer driver rammed into a LASTMA official at Ojodu Berger, severely injuring him. The driver, operating at high speed, lost control of the fully loaded trailer, which resulted in a violent collision. The LASTMA officer suffered severe trauma, including a fractured leg and hand. Despite the severe injuries, medical professionals at LASUTH determined that the officer’s leg would need to be amputated.
The driver fled the scene but was later apprehended by Ojodu Police Station operatives, working together with LASTMA officials. The General Manager of LASTMA, Olalekan Bakare-Oki, condemned the incident, urging all drivers, especially truck operators, to adhere to road safety measures to avoid such devastating outcomes.
Bakare-Oki visited the officer in the hospital, offering his sympathy and reinforcing LASTMA's commitment to ensuring traffic safety and promoting orderly conduct on Lagos roads. He also emphasized the importance of valuing human life and stressed that LASTMA officers are there to facilitate smooth traffic flow, not as adversaries to drivers.
This incident serves as a stark reminder of the crucial need for drivers to operate with caution, respecting safety protocols to prevent tragic accidents.
