Lagos lawmakers impeached Speaker Mudashiru Obasa over gross misconduct and abuse of office. Tobun Abiodun, representing Epe Constituency, explained the unanimous decision as necessary for the integrity of the parliament. Mojisola Meranda, Obasa’s deputy, was elected as the first female speaker in Lagos’ history.

Tobun Abiodun, a lawmaker representing Epe Constituency 1 in the Lagos Assembly, defended the impeachment of Mudashiru Obasa, stating that it was a necessary move to safeguard both the state and the legislature. On Monday, the Lagos lawmakers removed Obasa as speaker following accusations of gross misconduct and abuse of office. Obasa, who was in his third term as speaker, had served since 2015.

In a press briefing following the impeachment, Abiodun, along with fellow lawmakers, explained that the decision was unanimous. He emphasized that leadership changes are a natural part of governance, stating, "It is only death that is constant. Change is inevitable." According to Abiodun, the members felt it was time for a leadership change, and the constitution allows the House to regulate its proceedings.

Mojisola Meranda, who had previously served as Obasa’s deputy, was elected as the new speaker, making her the first female to hold this position in Lagos State’s history. Abiodun added that the decision was taken to restore the integrity and sanity of the assembly, ensuring that the legislature continues to function effectively and serve the people. He reiterated the collective responsibility of the lawmakers to improve the state and safeguard the reputation of the parliament.
