The House of Representatives has voted down key constitutional amendment bills, including proposals for rotational presidency and to transfer INEC’s powers to a new office.

  • Lawmakers rejected a bill mandating presidential rotation across Nigeria’s six geopolitical zones.
  • Another bill sought to remove INEC’s authority to register and regulate political parties.
  • Other proposals, including new LGAs and judiciary reforms, were also turned down in a group vote.

Deputy Minority Leader Aliyu Madaki argued zoning would fuel ethnic tension, while others feared it would lower leadership quality. Critics of the INEC bill warned that shifting control could politicize party registration and compromise democracy.

Will the National Assembly revisit these proposals individually, or will procedural hurdles stall reform efforts entirely?
