The League of Northern Democrats urges President Tinubu to exemplify cost-cutting measures in governance following criticisms of extravagant spending. While Tinubu limited ministerial convoys to three vehicles, the group argues that more substantial changes are needed to inspire true leadership and address Nigeria's economic challenges.

The League of Northern Democrats has called on President Bola Tinubu to exemplify leadership by genuinely reducing the cost of governance amid growing criticisms of extravagant lifestyles among officeholders. As Nigeria grapples with economic challenges, exacerbated by fuel subsidy removal and naira floating, Tinubu’s recent decision to limit ministerial convoys to three vehicles has sparked debate but is viewed by many as merely symbolic.

In a recent appearance on Channels Television’s Sunrise Daily, Ladan Salihu, the spokesman for the League of Northern Democrats, emphasized that true leadership requires setting a positive example. He pointed out the contradictions in Tinubu’s actions, highlighting the president’s purchase of a presidential jet for ₦170 billion and a yacht for ₦5 billion, which collectively overshadow any purported cost-saving measures.

Salihu expressed skepticism about the effectiveness of Tinubu's new directive, questioning the fate of the remaining vehicles that ministers possess. “You can’t simply reduce the visible number of vehicles while leaving others in storage,” he noted, suggesting that the status quo would likely persist despite the president's intentions.

The League of Northern Democrats believes that without substantive changes, such as a commitment to genuine austerity and transparency, the government's attempts to address cost inefficiencies will fall short.
