The Federal Government of Nigeria has officially upgraded Maiduguri’s Muhammadu Buhari Airport to international status, with full international flight operations set to begin on January 1, 2025. The announcement was made by the Minister of Aviation, Festus Keyamo, who highlighted the strategic importance of northeastern Nigeria, particularly Borno State, as a commercial hub that links Nigeria to countries in the Middle East.

Keyamo emphasized that the airport’s infrastructure, capacity, and the region’s population make it well-suited to handle international flights. This upgrade is expected to stimulate economic growth in Borno State, which has largely remained untapped in terms of its economic potential.

Borno State Governor Babagana Zulum expressed his satisfaction with the development and commended the Federal Government’s efforts in improving the aviation sector. Zulum assured that the regional governors would provide political support for the smooth operation of the airport.

The governor also urged the Federal Government to prioritize the establishment of a national air carrier, which would further strengthen Nigeria’s aviation industry and cater to the needs of Nigerians.
