A disturbing incident unfolded in Abuja when a 47-year-old vulcanizer, Saheed Ganiyu, allegedly set his 32-year-old girlfriend, Esther, on fire during an argument. The tragic event took place on December 29, 2024, at Jabi Motor Park. According to the police, the couple had been engaged in a heated dispute over Esther's alcohol consumption, which led to a physical altercation. Ganiyu reportedly had a plastic bottle of petrol in his armpit, which accidentally spilled onto Esther's clothing while they struggled. When he attempted to light a cigarette, the petrol ignited, engulfing her in flames.

As the flames spread, passersby rushed to help, but Esther suffered severe burns. Ganiyu, who was nearly lynched by an angry crowd, was rushed to the hospital for treatment. Police were alerted and quickly intervened, taking both Ganiyu and Esther to the National Hospital for urgent medical attention. While Esther remains in critical condition, Ganiyu expressed deep remorse, claiming the fire was an accident and that he loved her dearly.

Ganiyu explained that he had been concerned about Esther's drinking habits, which led to their argument that night. He further stated that he had not intentionally harmed her and described her as someone who had been supportive in the past. Despite this, the police are continuing their investigation, and Ganiyu is expected to face legal consequences once the inquiry is completed.
