A violent altercation between 47-year-old vulcaniser, Saheed Ganiyu, and his girlfriend, Esther, turned tragic on December 29, 2024, when Ganiyu allegedly set her on fire during an argument. Ganiyu reportedly poured petrol from a bottle he had on him while trying to light a cigarette, which accidentally ignited after coming into contact with Esther's dress during a struggle. The incident occurred at Jabi Motor Park, Abuja, where a large crowd witnessed the altercation, and Ganiyu was subsequently beaten before being taken to the hospital for treatment.
Esther, who sustained severe burns, was rushed to the National Hospital, Abuja, in critical condition, and is still undergoing medical care. Ganiyu, who initially faced lynching by the mob, claims the fire was unintentional and resulted from petrol dripping onto Esther’s dress while they struggled over her drinking alcohol.
Despite the severity of the incident, he expressed regret and insisted that he loved her, even suggesting marriage. However, Esther’s uncle has raised concerns about the mounting medical expenses, as she may need to remain in the hospital for months. The police have since launched an investigation, and Ganiyu will face legal action once the inquiry is concluded.
