David Nwokorie’s arrest after a breakup with a retired DIG’s daughter has raised concerns about abuse of police power. Detained for alleged cyberstalking, he faces extreme bail conditions, including ₦500m sureties. Human rights groups and lawyers are calling the case a disturbing misuse of influence.

The Nigerian Police Force has come under fire for imposing unusually strict bail conditions on David Nwokorie, who was arrested after a fallout with his ex-girlfriend, Genevieve Opara, daughter of retired Deputy Inspector General of Police, Hilary Opara.

David was apprehended by officers from the Force Criminal Investigation Department (FCID) after Genevieve, a Deputy Manager at the National Pension Commission and wife of FRSC official Seal Nwaka, accused him of cyberstalking and blackmail. The controversy emerged following their breakup and escalated after David allegedly exposed personal details about her online, including claims about her mental health and prior relationships.

Human rights activist Omoyele Sowore condemned the police’s bail conditions, describing them as oppressive. According to legal documents, David is required to present two sureties: either senior government officials not below Grade Level 17 or Abuja-based businesspersons owning properties worth ₦500 million, verified with Certificates of Occupancy. Additional documentation includes ID cards, CAC registration, passports, and photographs.

David’s legal counsel, Barr. Ezike Chibuzor maintains that the feud began when David learned Genevieve had hidden details about her past marriage and children. Things worsened after he proposed to someone else, sparking a confrontation that allegedly led Genevieve to vandalize his property.

In response, David reportedly demanded ₦25 million in damages and published a “wanted” poster online, which triggered Genevieve’s police complaint. The case has drawn criticism over alleged abuse of power and misuse of police influence by high-ranking families.
