Over 5,000 political defectors from APC, LP, NNPP, and SDP have joined the PDP in Okpokwu, Benue, citing dissatisfaction with the ruling party’s failure to address security concerns. Senator Abba Moro was praised for his developmental efforts. The event signals a major political shift in the state.

In a dramatic shift within Benue State’s political landscape, more than 5,000 members from various political parties, including the All Progressives Congress (APC), Labour Party (LP), New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), and Social Democratic Party (SDP), have officially defected to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). The move has sparked significant conversation within the region, highlighting deepening discontent with the current political environment.

The defectors gathered in Okpokwu Local Government Area on Monday, where leaders of the movement, including Onah Idoko Alexander, John Adole, Engr. Adegbo Moses, Mike Ejeba, Ocheme Candidus, and Abah Ejeh, addressed the crowd. They cited the failure of the ruling APC, both at the state and federal levels, to effectively address the security challenges and improve governance in Benue. According to the leaders, the administration's lack of responsiveness has forced them to reconsider their political affiliations.

“The APC has failed us,” said the group’s spokesperson during the defection event. “The security situation in our state has worsened, and no concrete steps have been taken to alleviate the suffering of our people. We are now looking to a party that values our security, progress, and overall wellbeing.”

One of the key figures celebrated during the event was Senator Abba Moro, who was hailed by the defectors for his continued commitment to the development of Benue South. The group praised Moro for his exceptional leadership and his tangible contributions to the district’s growth. “Senator Moro has done what others could not. He has shown us the true meaning of leadership, and it’s clear that he has made a positive impact in every community in Benue South,” they stated.

Senator Moro, visibly pleased with the turnout, welcomed the new members into the PDP fold, assuring them of equal opportunities within the party. He also reiterated his dedication to delivering results for the people of Benue South, particularly in addressing the region’s infrastructural and security challenges.

“The PDP is a party that values the voice of the people, and I promise that you will all be given the platform to thrive,” Senator Moro assured the crowd. “We will work together to build a prosperous and secure future for our communities.”

The defection event, which was marked by a celebratory atmosphere, also saw the presence of several key political figures, including the Minority Leader of the Benue State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Mike Audu, and the PDP Chairman of Okpokwu Local Government, Hon. Christopher Okpabi. Both figures expressed their excitement at the large-scale defections, predicting that this shift could mark the beginning of a new political era for the region.

The mass defection in Benue comes amid increasing dissatisfaction with the current administration's handling of state and national issues. As the 2023 elections draw nearer, this development could potentially alter the political dynamics in the state, leaving many to wonder what this will mean for the future of the APC, LP, NNPP, and PDP.
