Kaduna-based Islamic cleric Sheikh Ahmad Gumi has shed light on his recent engagement with Nigerian security agents, following an invitation over security concerns. This development, confirmed by the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, sparked curiosity and raised questions about the nature of the discussions.
In a statement shared on his Facebook page, Sheikh Gumi reassured the public, emphasizing that there was no cause for alarm. Describing the interaction as "productive," he underscored the shared goal of addressing the scourge of banditry plaguing the nation. Sheikh Gumi emphasized the importance of unity and collaboration in tackling the complex challenges facing Nigeria, expressing gratitude for the concern expressed by well-wishers.
However, Sheikh Gumi's engagement with security agencies comes amidst his outspoken criticism of their handling of banditry activities in the North-west. He has consistently offered solutions to the crisis, advocating for a holistic approach to address the root causes of insecurity. Moreover, Sheikh Gumi has voiced objections to the Nigerian government's publication of names purportedly linked to terrorism financing.
During a conversation hosted by Daily Trust, Sheikh Gumi condemned what he termed "media trials," asserting that such pronouncements should be left to the courts. He questioned the authority of security agencies to label individuals as terrorist financiers, emphasizing the need for judicial due process.
