The Federal Neuropsychiatric Hospital in Yaba, Lagos, has witnessed an unprecedented 100% surge in psychiatric admissions during the year 2023, as revealed by the hospital's Chief Medical Director, Dr Olugbenga Owoeye.
Speaking at the Annual Score Card presentation, Dr Owoeye attributed the spike to the country's current economic challenges and various socio-economic factors impacting mental health.
The director highlighted a 7% increase in new cases and a 3% rise in follow-up patients, both male and female. Notably, drug abuse cases saw a 10% increase, while discharge cases reduced by 10%. Dr Owoeye outlined the hospital's achievements, including infrastructure developments and rehabilitation projects.
Despite these successes, inadequate manpower and funding emerged as major challenges in 2023, with health professionals leaving for better opportunities. Looking ahead to 2024, Dr Owoeye emphasized the prioritization of staff welfare and increased efforts in manpower development and training.
The hospital aims to complete ongoing projects to enhance mental health care service delivery.
