AEDC has released the names of customers eligible for refunds or compensation following regulatory sanctions for overbilling unmetered users. NERC ordered a N1.69bn deduction from AEDC’s budget after billing violations.
- NERC sanctioned AEDC for violating the cap on estimated bills
- Overbilled customers between May–Sept 2023 are now eligible for credit
- Refunds include credit adjustments and extra prepaid units
- Lists published for the Wuse zone and other Abuja districts
- Compensation was also issued to Band A customers for the inadequate power supply
The NERC’s sanction, a 10% clawback from AEDC’s annual spend, sends a clear message: overbilling won’t be tolerated. For many Nigerians, this marks a rare moment of accountability in the power sector. While some customers will see refunds reflected as credit or units, others are just finding out they were ever overbilled. With transparency still shaky and trust in short supply, this refund list might offer momentary relief, but the bigger issue of consistent, fair billing remains unresolved.
Check the AEDC website, you might be owed money or units. But also ask: why did it take this long, and how many others were missed?
