The Sokoto State Government confirmed the deaths of 10 villagers, offering compensation and promising an investigation into the incident.

The Nigerian military has responded to allegations surrounding its recent airstrikes in Sokoto State, which reportedly resulted in civilian casualties. The strikes, conducted on December 25, 2024, targeted areas in the Silame Local Government Area believed to be linked to the Lakurawa terrorist group. However, the Sokoto State Government has claimed that the 10 individuals who died were innocent villagers.

During a visit to Sokoto, Chief of Defence Staff General Christopher Musa addressed the controversy, emphasizing that the operation was carefully planned and executed based on credible intelligence. He acknowledged the possibility of errors and assured the public that a thorough investigation would be conducted. General Musa also urged civilians to avoid harboring or associating with criminal groups, warning that such actions could inadvertently make them targets.

Sokoto State Governor Ahmed Aliyu visited the affected communities to offer condolences and support. He attended the funeral prayers for the deceased and announced a ₦20 million relief package for the victims' families. Describing the event as an unfortunate mistake, the governor highlighted the military's previous successes in eliminating criminal threats without civilian harm.

Despite the incident, the military has pledged to continue its operations against terrorism while minimizing risks to innocent lives. Officials also called on the media and public to verify information to prevent the spread of misinformation that could undermine security efforts.
