Today, nationwide tensions escalate as the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) commences a widespread strike following failed negotiations with the federal government over the minimum wage.
Led by Joe Ajaero and Festus Osifo, labour representatives expressed dissatisfaction after talks with President Bola Tinubu yielded no concrete agreement on wage adjustments. Osifo clarified that the meeting was preliminary and did not delve into specific monetary figures, emphasizing that critical issues like economic hardships and currency devaluation were raised and will be revisited in a week. Ajaero echoed these sentiments, underscoring the gap between labour's proposal of ₦250,000 and the government's offer of ₦62,000.
Minister Nkeiruka Onyejeocha characterized the discussions as constructive but acknowledged unresolved differences. The impasse underscores ongoing challenges in achieving consensus on crucial economic policies affecting Nigerian workers.
