In a groundbreaking moment for the Miss South Africa pageant, Mia Le Roux has been crowned Miss South Africa 2024. Le Roux, who is the first deaf contestant to win the title, triumphed over nine other finalists in the competition held on Saturday. Her victory marks a significant milestone in the pageant's history, highlighting both diversity and inclusion.
Le Roux, a descendant of Dutch settlers known as Boers, represents the minority white population in South Africa. Along with her title, she will receive a substantial cash prize of $53,371 (R1 million), a Mercedes Benz car, and a fully furnished luxury apartment. Currently an undergraduate, Le Roux plans to focus on advocacy for people living with disabilities as part of her platform.
Her win comes after Nigerian-Mozambican model Chidinma Vanessa Onwe Adetshina withdrew from the competition. Adetshina, who had qualified for the Top 11, faced scrutiny over her nationality and was at the center of a controversy involving allegations of fraud by South Africa’s Department of Home Affairs. This controversy contributed to her decision to step down from the contest.
