The Chairman of the Northern Elders Forum (NEF), Ango Abdullahi, has publicly supported the proposed amendment to the Nigerian constitution, advocating a shift back to the parliamentary system of government.
Mr. Abdullahi expressed his endorsement during a meeting with members of the House of Representatives Parliamentary System Caucus, who are actively promoting a constitutional alteration bill seeking to replace the current presidential system.
The NEF Chairman argued that the parliamentary system, previously practiced during the First Republic, was more effective and inclusive. He criticized the presidential system's failure over the past 24 years and pledged unwavering support for the lawmakers pushing for the return to the parliamentary system.
The proposed constitutional amendment aims to reduce the cost of governance and elections, promoting accountability and a government closer to the people. The bill has gained traction with endorsements from influential figures, including former APC national chairman Bisi Akande and elder statesman Aminu Dantata.
