Abia State has confirmed its first case of monkeypox and has set up a treatment center at the Abia State University Teaching Hospital (ABSUTH) in Aba. The announcement was made during a recent Executive Council meeting, chaired by Governor Alex Otti.

The case was identified in the Isiala Ngwa local government area, and officials reported a total of 13 suspected cases, with only one testing positive so far. The state’s Commissioner for Information, Okey Kanu, emphasized the importance of maintaining hygiene and social distancing, especially around suspected cases. Fortunately, no fatalities have been reported, with nine cases returning negative results and two pending classification.

Ngozi Azodo, the governor’s special adviser on health, urged residents to practice regular personal hygiene, minimize contact with animals, and avoid self-medication. She also encouraged people to report any suspected cases to local health facilities promptly. The government remains optimistic about controlling the situation and is prepared to open additional treatment centers if needed. The proactive measures aim to prevent further spread of the disease in the state.
