The Nigerian Boxing Board of Control is investigating, with an autopsy pending to determine the cause of death.
The mother of Nigerian boxer Segun ‘Success’ Olanrewaju has called for justice following her son's tragic death during a boxing match in Ghana. Olanrewaju, 40, collapsed in the ring after battling Ghanaian boxer John Mbagunu, known as “Power,” in Accra on March 29, 2025. His mother revealed that prior to the fight, Olanrewaju had texted her, claiming he was being pressured to lose, but he refused to step down. Tragically, after enduring three rounds, he could no longer lift his arms and passed away.
She urged President Bola Tinubu and Nigerians to seek justice, sharing that Segun was her only child and the family’s main provider. The Nigerian Boxing Board of Control (NBB of C) has launched an investigation into the incident, with an autopsy ordered by Ghanaian authorities to determine the cause of death. Olanrewaju was facing financial difficulties and had previously planned to return to Nigeria before being persuaded to stay and fight.
Olanrewaju’s tragic death has sparked national outrage, with the NBB of C promising to ensure a thorough investigation. The cause of the death remains uncertain, though the board's officials emphasized the need for transparency, and they are awaiting the results of the autopsy, which may take longer due to Ghana's public holidays.
