Jose Mourinho has denied racism allegations after being banned for two matches for comments about Galatasaray’s bench. The Fenerbahce boss insists his words were misinterpreted, highlighting his strong ties to African players. Backed by former stars like Drogba and Mikel Obi, Mourinho calls Galatasaray’s accusations a failed attack.
Fenerbahce manager Jose Mourinho has addressed accusations of racism after receiving a two-match touchline ban and a fine for comments made during a heated derby against Galatasaray.
Following the 0-0 draw, Mourinho criticized Galatasaray's coaching staff, accusing them of excessive reactions on the sidelines by saying they were "jumping like monkeys." His remarks led to allegations of racism, prompting disciplinary action. Originally handed a four-match ban and a £35,000 fine, an appeal reduced it to two matches and £12,200.
Mourinho, however, has strongly denied any racist intent, stating that those attacking him did not understand his deep connections with Africa and African footballers. He pointed to the public support he received from former players such as Didier Drogba, Mikel Obi, and Michael Essien as proof of his character.
"They didn't know my history or my work with African players and charities," Mourinho told Sky Sports. "It backfired on them because everyone knows who I am. Racism is not one of my faults."
The Portuguese coach also criticized Galatasaray for using such allegations in an attempt to discredit him, calling it a "low blow." He admitted frustration at the situation but refused to engage further in the controversy.
Mourinho expressed gratitude to those who defended him, including individuals who are not necessarily his supporters. "Even people who don’t like me showed support," he noted.
