MTN Nigeria CEO, Karl Toriola, and two executives will face court on May 28 for alleged non-compliance with a summons from the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC). The case highlights issues surrounding business regulations and consumer protection in Nigeria’s telecommunications sector.
The Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC) has scheduled the arraignment of MTN Nigeria’s Chief Executive Officer, Karl Toriola, and other top executives for May 28 at the Federal High Court in Abuja. The case involves allegations of failing to comply with requests for documents and information as mandated by the commission.
Alongside Toriola, MTN’s Chief Corporate Services and Sustainability Officer, Tobechukwu Okigbo, and Regulatory Affairs General Manager, Ikenna Ikeme, are also expected in court. The FCCPC claims that the company and its executives did not meet obligations set out in a formal summons, leading to legal action.
During a recent session, the court noted the absence of the defendants. FCCPC’s legal representative requested additional time to review the case, prompting Justice H.J. Yilwa to reschedule the hearing for May 28.
In a separate legal issue, MTN Nigeria and its leadership are also facing a copyright-related lawsuit filed by the Nigerian Copyright Commission (NCC). The charges, which are before a different judge, allege the unauthorized sale and distribution of musical works as caller ringback tunes without proper rights. This case, linked to alleged infringements from 2010 to 2017, is set for further proceedings on May 15.
