The MTV Video Music Awards 2024 has once again included a dedicated category for Afrobeats, showcasing the genre's rising global influence. This year’s nominees for Best Afrobeats include Ayra Starr for her Giveon-assisted track “Last Heartbreak Song,” Burna Boy’s “City Boys,” and Tyla’s Grammy-winning hit “Water.” Nigerian producer and singer Pheelz also received a nod for his contribution to Usher’s “Ruin.”
Last year’s winner in this category was Rema for his popular remix of “Calm Down” with Selena Gomez, setting a high benchmark for subsequent nominees. The success of each nominated song's accompanying video adds to the competitive field.
