Governor Caleb Mutfwang has urged Plateau communities to defend themselves amid deadly attacks by gunmen. While condemning lawlessness, he emphasized community vigilance as key to ending insecurity. He also revealed state investments in technology and vowed stronger collaboration with security agencies to restore peace and development in the region.
Governor Caleb Mutfwang has called on citizens to take responsibility for their protection while reaffirming government support for lawful defense efforts.
During a visit to Zike and Kimakpa in Bassa Local Government Area, where dozens were killed and homes destroyed by unidentified gunmen, the governor offered condolences to grieving families and expressed frustration over the recurring violence that has plagued the region.
“We’ve reached a point in Nigeria where every community must take steps to defend itself. We can’t afford to go to sleep anymore,” Mutfwang stated. He stressed, however, that his comments should not be interpreted as encouraging lawlessness or vigilantism.
Governor Mutfwang acknowledged federal support, including that of President Bola Tinubu, and urged security forces to intensify efforts to prevent future attacks. Still, he emphasized that lasting peace will come through local vigilance and collective community action.
The governor also highlighted state-level investments in security technology, aimed at providing early warning and surveillance to prevent such tragedies. He lamented that persistent insecurity has stifled Plateau’s development and economic growth, leaving residents unable to farm or do business freely.
He concluded by urging youths to channel their energy into lawful self-defense and community resilience, warning that the current crisis threatens the future prosperity of the state.
