The Nigerian Air Force has launched an investigation into accidental air strikes in Zamfara, which reportedly killed 16 civilians and vigilantes. The air strikes, targeting bandits, mistakenly hit locals. NAF assures accountability and safety measures will be taken to prevent further civilian casualties during operations.

The Nigerian Air Force (NAF) has launched an investigation following reports that more than 16 civilians and vigilantes were accidentally killed during air strikes in Zamfara State last weekend. The strikes, which took place in Tungar Kara, Zurmi Local Government Area (LGA), targeted what was believed to be bandit hideouts. However, the victims were mistakenly identified as bandits after the real culprits had fled the area.

Initially, NAF’s director of public relations, Olusola Akinboyewa, denied any civilian casualties, claiming that the air strikes were based on reliable intelligence. However, the Zamfara state government contradicted this, confirming that the strikes in Maradun and Zurmi LGAs had indeed caused civilian deaths.

In response to the allegations, Akinboyewa expressed deep concern over the unintended deaths and emphasized that the NAF values the lives of all Nigerians. He assured that a thorough investigation would be conducted to determine the facts and hold those responsible accountable.

NAF reiterated its commitment to combatting banditry in the region while prioritizing civilian safety. The investigation's findings will be made public, and the NAF has promised to take further steps to prevent harm to innocent people during military operations.
