NAFDAC has issued a warning over the circulation of fake Knowit Insulin Syringes (40 IU/ml), stating that their use could cause severe dosing errors for diabetic patients. The agency has ordered the removal of falsified products and urged medical professionals to verify authenticity before distribution.

The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has issued a strong warning to Nigerians regarding the illegal distribution of fake Knowit Insulin Syringe 40 IU 29g X 1/2, stating that its use poses severe health risks to diabetic patients. The agency revealed that the Association of Community Pharmacists of Nigeria (ACPN) had raised concerns over 40 IU/ml insulin syringes, which are no longer standard for human insulin treatment.

NAFDAC explained that human insulin is only available in 100 IU/ml, making the continued use of 40 IU/ml syringes dangerous due to the high risk of incorrect dosing and potentially life-threatening complications. The agency identified Chivic Limited as the distributor of the falsified product and confirmed that the registration number on the product, 03-2933, is fake, with the original license having expired in 2019.

NAFDAC has ordered all zonal directors and state coordinators to remove the substandard syringes from the market to prevent further harm. The agency has also urged medical professionals, importers, and distributors to ensure that all medical products come from authorized suppliers. Nigerians are advised to be cautious and verify the authenticity of medical supplies before purchase to avoid serious health risks.
